Vendee Globe race is about to begin! Once every 4-years, sailors go around the world, alone, nonstop in modern 60' sailboats. These 33 sailors will spend about 3 months in hideous conditions from huge storms in the Southern Ocean to the stillness of the Doldrums. 19 are foiling monsters. 6 women are competing with the men. This is the epitome of endurance sports. My favorites are Alex Thomson (of course) and Jerome Beyou. Hope Sam Davies and/or Pip Hare make the podium.

Interesting coincidence . I just did read about this in yesterday in a magazine on our company coffee table.

Can you imagine this thing? Nearly 3-months thrashing and banging around in a little carbon shell powered only by the wind. Isolation, wet, cold, trashed hands, and having to create media content, watch the weather and waves and eat and sleep enough. These are truly tough, tough people. Most don’t finish...
Sure, I like fast cars but I like wind-powered boats
as well. The
faster the better (Paul Larsen an Sailrocket)
. These
guys and gals have had 4 years to perfect their rides in various short (Transat,
Jaque Vabre)
and long races (Route du Rhumb)
to get these beasts optimized for this race. Now it’s the big one. And with modern comms, we can follow them all the way around with updates every 1/2 hour.

I do like the idea for this race. Me being Finnish means that spending long times alone is completely fine. One of my countryman is competing but he seems to be the last one currently. I think we wasn’t aiming for the win but wants to finish the race.
His boat finished 2008 VG race as 6th by the previous owner . It circled around the world the second time in another race. But it had been hibernating until the Finnish dude managed to purchase it.

Yea, Fabrice Amadeo has turned back but he hasn’t retired . Seems a small break that he wants fixed before the long haul. No he won’t be on the podium. Most of these folks are just trying to finish, a great endeavor and achievement , particularly for the rookies.
